Question about how much google ads pays.

Hey, so I've got a niche that shows CPC, anywhere from $8 - $25/30 for long tails, up towards $80 and more for shorter words that we're targeting.

I clicked a few of the ads directly from the site, on another computer at an internet cafe the other day to see if we'd earn anything, and it gave us 1.50 per click. I thought google only pays when the traffic comes from the search engine?

My question is, how does google determine how much to pay when an ad is clicked? Does it depend on the user finding it through a specific search for a keyword? And it's not from a search for that keyword, how does it know how much to pay? Or is there a default?

Say: Dog Food is searched, and then the user clicks the ad on our site. Will it pay out for the keyword dog food?

What happens if it's direct traffic that's not from google. Maybe a twitter following, or facebook? How will it delineate between the $25 cpc, and the $80 cpc's?

Thanks.
