Okay so I'd like to start a discussion on monetizing mobile search.
If you've been keeping up to date you'll know that mobile/cell phone/tablet search is getting MUCH bigger and as marketers, we need to stay on top of this trend.
More people have smart phones/tablets and people are searching for, 'how to lose weight' 'how to cook an egg' etc on their portable devices rather than booting up the old PC..
Monetizing the mobile market is DIFFERENT.
Why is this?
Buying complicated things or products with many separate parts is much easier on a computer - If I'm buying a new TV and a sound system, it's way easier to go on my computer to buy it and I feel more in control.
It's a fairly big purchase so I want to make sure I get the right thing. I feel I'm going to get a better result if I use my PC and not my phone.
As smart phones get better and better this trait is changing though and more people are feeling comfortable buying things on their phones.
I think the key point I want to make first is that somethings will work and others will not - for example people don't stream films/tv from their phones as much as they do via the pc, however people DO search for things like 'weather' 'who wrote the song we will rock you' and other random bits of trivia that they think about as they go about their daily business..
This is what I'm excited about monetizing - phrases that are more likely to be searched from a phone.
We must also take into account the type of monetizing - it's MUCH harder to fill out a CPA unlock or CPA offer in general on a smart phone and chances are users will just get bored/frustrated much faster than they would on a PC. This is why we must be careful about the offers we put on our mobile sites.
AMAZON could be a KEY player in monetizing mobile search - Why is this?
They have 'one click' ordering and this means that a user won't have to type in long card details and shipping information (all things which are harder to do on phones and can be offputting)
Here's something else to take into consideration - phones are much more likely to stay logged in to websites such as AMAZON and facebook - more so than PCs.
This can be great for getting quick conversions - A guy is walking down the street in the summer, he smells a bbq, 'mmm yummy', he thinks, 'I need to get myself a BBQ' on the way home he searches on his phone for BBQs, first result is your site which links him straight to amazon after comparing the top BBQs, he's already logged in and he 'one click' buys.
Well I hope this sparked a few ideas, what have you got to add?
