Ok, so I've got a new client whose site was hit pretty hard by penguin/EMD. We've got him a new domain, and plan to copy his site to the new domain. I planned to simply create a static page on the old domain with a nofollow link that says "We moved, click here to go to our new site" or something like that. But the client really wants the site to automatically redirect customers, so they don't even have to click. Questions:
1. I know a 301 redirect will pass a domain's penalty to another site. Has anybody done this with a 302? 302s aren't supposed to pass link juice - I'm thinking that means for good or bad. Worst case scenario, maybe I put up a static page, as mentioned above, and include a 302 for a month or so. Once he forgets about it, I remove the 302, just in case there's any chance of it having an affect.
2. Am I crazy to copy over the exact content, especially when the old site is being redirected to the new one? Am I just asking for trouble? If so, how much rewriting are we talking about - a moderate amount, or completely redoing the content?
