I'm not going to tell you the site because I'm working on getting it going again but just for some info on what you might not want to do here's a little information on how I made my life a little more difficult for myself.
This site was ranking on the first page for quite a few terms before I did this.
I had never purchased domains for the sole purpose of redirecting them before & I found a domain that was expired with thousands of links to it so I figured I would just buy it to see if I could get some traffic, what's $10 for a few targetted visitors right? Everything I had read told me that google doesn't give a darn about expired domains & that the links aren't valued.
Well this domain I purchased had a ton of crappy blog comment & forum links to it and about a week or so after I redirected it using 301 my site dropped off the grid from Google, sad. Everything I had done before that had been just slow & steady link building. I also did this with the Google updates that happened in sept & october but everything was compliant before that so I'm 99% sure that it was redirecting that expired domain that did it to me.
I could be wrong but if I choose to do that in the future I will be using a different redirect method than 301 & that would be my advice to anyone else as well.
