FYI- Ranking & SEO Part 1

Hello everyone, just finished up watching Matt Cutts do a speaking and wanted to share some great information with everyone here. I would say that 98% of you understand what Page Rank (PR) is and half of that percentage actually understand the logistics of how a PR is derived. I myself have been doing SEO for over 5 years and I have to say that there's always SOMEthing to learn and "One" of the most important things to understand in my opinion is PageRank. Now everyone knows that Page Rank is achieved by building back links (a link pointing to your site from another site) though I'm going to go into detail on this.

One of the great things that was discussed I want to talk about are links. Take a look at the following.

Site 1 Has:
1 x PR7 + 25 x PR6 + 151 x (PR5 and PR4) + 120 x (PR3)

Site 2 Has:

(4 x PR6 + 38 + PR5 + 17 x PR4)

Now, site 1 is wondering why his competitor (Site 2) is ranking above him with only 59 links while he has 297 links. As Matt put it, site owners are too focused on Back link obsession. Unfortunately, the tendency with site owners tend to be, "I need thousands of links from many different sources and I need them quick"! That's not the correct approach! There's a tension between "Reputability" and "Relevancy" and it's not the quantity of links you have but the quality of the links pointing to your site and the relevancy of the ones pointing to you. Simply acquiring a PR5 link from lets say a Private Blog network that's in the Educational niche linking to your online "Pet Care" supply store will no longer give you the benefits as it once did in the past (That was just an example). Before they just took more of a look at the authority of the site linking to you though with them now making sure it's a relevant referral, it's imperative that you build relevant links. Think of it this way, Google wants to ensure their users are paired with quality content and for you to rank well to show up to users, you need to establish a good reputation and a good Page Rank. Relevancy is now just as important if not more important then the PR of the links you're building as unrelated links pointing to your site could raise a red flag and look unnatural which could have adverse effects on your sites rankings.

Now this is just a little tip I wanted to throw out there that is often times over looked and it pertains to Permalinks. Of course, when we start a site, we are usually wanting to target multiple keywords and there's a small simple way to do this that can help. Let's say your starting a MNS and your post is titled "Changing the oil on a car", most of the time, your URL structure will look like /changingtheoilonacar when just a simple change to /changetheoilonacar could bring you much better results. It may be such a simple technique but could bring in two very different results for your site when ranking. The general idea with this is to think of how the user would perform the search. Essentially, you're targeting two different ways to rank by creating two different variations of what someone could search to find your site/post. Very simple yet very effective and I've seen many sites rank well doing this.

Another thing is Keyword stuffing which many sites are now being penalized for. One thing that was pointed out is lets say you write an article and you mentioned the keyword "Bedroom Sets" 50 times (Exaggerating but you get the point), Google isn't going to say hey this article over here only mentioned "Bedroom Sets" 2 times so this article must be much more relevant. That's not how it works. Mention your keyword a few times throughout the article in a standard 450-500 word piece of content and your article will be properly interpreted and ranked accordingly by Google. Analyzing your keyword density is important and should never be over looked.

Well, that was a lot of typing. There's a lot more I'm going to cover over the next couple of weeks and am going to go much more in depth on each of these I just wanted to take some time to write this out for everyone here. I hope everyone has a good night! :)
