This is captain obvious for most people, but this idea can actually save a few sites for newcomers.
So you just bought an awesome tool and can't wait to use it, you scraped a mountain of links for comments/forums etc and want to try those out.
But what if your technique isn't good enough? what if it penalizes you?
To ensure that this doesn't happen, first try it on some other site which doesn't belong to you at all!!
1) Go and find a keyword that is similar to your keywords' in global/local searches but in different niche.
2) Find a site that is in the same position for that keyword as your site is for yours.
3) treat it like your own site, do quality work on it, and see whether it goes up or down. When you find that your method brings good results, do the same thing on your site. Not only will you save yourself from getting penalized, you will also help someone =)
